DMX is headed back behind bars, as the Ruff Ryders rapper was sentenced to 12 months in prison for tax evasion on Wednesday (March 28), TMZ reports.
"X addressed the judge directly Wednesday in the NYC courtroom, and took responsibility for his actions," the outlet stated. "He said he was too old to be doing the things he's doing, and admitted he hasn't been thinking straight. The judge gave him 1 year behind bars, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release."
As we previously reported, DMX's lawyer, Murray Richman, planned to play some of the artist's songs during his sentencing in order for the judge to "understand him genuinely in his voice." The lawyer added, "It is raw Earl. We are not here or desirous of molding him into what some may want to see; Earl is uniquely him and that is both his beauty of mind and his genius."
TMZ confirms that the lawyer showed the judge X's "Slippin'" music video today. We guess it sort of worked because X only got 1 year behind bars, while prosecutors were pushing for the maximum sentence of five years.
"DMX entered a guilty plea to one count of tax evasion this past November as part of a deal his attorneys struck with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY," TMZ closes. "Before the deal, he was facing 14 counts and 44 years incarcerated."
