Cardi B may be one of the hottest rappers in the game, but she's got to appear in court just like the rest of us.
After skipping out on her scheduled court hearing in connection to her assault case on Monday (December 3), the judge issued her lawyer a stern warning, threatening to throw her in jail if she misses the next court date. "I want you to convey to her that it’s not acceptable that she’s not here today," Queens Criminal Court Judge Sean Dunn told Cardi's lawyer, Jeff Kern, before issuing a new date of December 7, according to Page Six. "You should inform her that if she doesn’t show up, that unless circumstances change, it’s very likely that the court will issue a bench warrant for her arrest."
Jeff had previously told the judge that Cardi's hectic schedule as a rapper was to blame for her absence. "As you probably know she is a fairly notable hip-hop artist. My client knew the date but there was a previously scheduled commitment for today and tomorrow," he explained.
Despite Jeff's explanation, the prosecutor on the case asked that Cardi be issued a bench warrant for missing the court date. "We want to treat this like any other case. We didn’t want to give preference because she is a big artist," Queens Assistant District Attorney told the judge. However, Judge Dunn went a different route, simply issuing Cardi a warning. "Thank you, your honor. Message received loud and clear," her lawyer responded to the news.
After leaving the court, the "Money" rapper's attorney further explained why she could not appear in court on Monday. "You all need to understand this is not about her saying, ‘Screw going to court. I got things to do. I’m important.' She has managers, she has business people, she has things scheduled. So it’s not like we can just say, 'Hey you got to come to court on Monday,'" he said outside the courthouse.
As previously reported, Cardi was charged with two misdemeanors — reckless endangerment, and assault — in October, after turning herself in to police in connection to a fight at a Queens strip club in August. The "Bodak Yellow" rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, was charged for allegedly ordering an attack on the two bartenders — sisters Jade and Baddie G — at Angels Strip Club. The fight reportedly went down because Cardi believed one of the bartenders slept with her husband, Offset.
