San Diego Pride Festival Will Be Virtual For A Second Year

San Diego Pride announced its largest July celebrations will be held virtually this year.

This is the second year in a row Pride has been a virtual event for the city since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, reports FOX5.

San Diego Pride decided to celebrate online again after communication with local, state, and federal elected and public health officials.

"Yes, there is a vaccine, but the rollout has been slower than expected," said Executive Director of SD Pride, Fernando Zweifach López in a statement. "Without clear federal leadership, funding, and a plan to vaccinate the U.S. population, it’s nearly impossible to plan any large gatherings with certainty."

Details about the virtual and limited-capacity in-person events on July 10-18 will be revealed in early June.

So far, the SD Pride website has listed She Fest, Light Up the Cathedral, and the Spirit of Stonewall Rally as events leading up to Pride Weekend.

According to FOX5, SD Pride will produce small in-person "satellite" events throughout San Diego County to celebrate the area's LGBTQ communities.

"Our brilliantly diverse community has a history of resilience. We have built innovative pathways to overcome discriminatory laws, hate, violence, and issues of public health," said López. "We will make it through this. Wear a mask, wash your hands, maintain your physical distance, and get your vaccination when it’s available to you. We’re almost to the other side of this, and soon we’ll be together again."
