California Will Pay Off Residents' Past-Due Rent

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the state of California will pay off all past-due rent that was accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic, reports AP News.

However, they are still deciding if they will continue to ban evictions for unpaid rent after June 30, the date that the state's eviction moratorium is set to expire.

While federal eviction protections also expire on the same day, California passed its own protections that incorporated more people.

ā€œThe expectation for people to be up and at ā€™em and ready to pay rent on July 1 is wholeheartedly unfair,ā€ Kelli Lloyd, a 43-year-old single mother told AP. She says she has not worked consistently since the pandemic began in March of 2020.

While her unpaid rent will be covered by the state, she recently lost a job at a real estate brokerage and has yet to find another.

ā€œSimply because the state has opened back up doesnā€™t mean people have access to their jobs,ā€ she said.

According to AP, California has $5.2 billion in people's rent to pay off. The money will come from multiple aid packages approved by Congress.

However, the state has been slow to distribute that money and will unlikely be able to spend it all by June 30.

Advocates for an extension say they're hopeful since Newsom told Univision he "definitively" wanted to extend eviction protections beyond June 30.
