A new trend on the social media platform TikTok has San Diego County school districts on high alert.
According to NBC7, the nationwide viral challenge has students committing crimes.
The "devious licks" challenge involves students showcasing items such as wet floor signs, hand sanitizer dispensers, microscopes, and other items supposedly stolen from school properties.
The videos began to circulate online last month but have since been banned from the platform.
San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold sent a warning on Wednesday, September 15, to all school districts.
A letter to parents and guardians from interim Superintendent Lucile Lynch of the San Dieguito Union High School District claimed that schools in her district "have already sustained damage," reports NBC7.
“Our buildings are meant to be a safe, clean space for our students and staff, and we will not tolerate the destruction and theft of school property,” read Lynch’s statement. “Replacing these items is very costly and takes precious time away from other priorities. Beyond this, our custodial team works very hard to serve our student population and keep our campuses clean and safe, especially with the increased risks from COVID-19.”
