A new restaurant is hoping to bring more West African cuisine to the San Diego area is expected to open by the end of December in National City.

According to Eater San Diego, Nigeria Breeze will be owner Maria Onisemo's first establishment in the United States although her family has operated restaurants in Nigeria.

Onisemo and her mother, who is the restaurant's head chef, ran a private catering business together for several years. Now, they're looking forward to sharing their regional family recipes for traditional West African food.

The menu will feature jollof rice, a tomato-based rice dish with chicken and plantains, a spinach and pepper stew called efo riro, egusi soup, a savory yam porridge called asaro, and more delicious options.

Nigeria Breeze will open in a 1,788-square-foot space in the South Bay, but Onisemo tells Eater San Diego she would eventually like to franchise the business and see it open in malls and hotels to help bring Nigerian food into the mainstream food scene.
