No Break From Steep Rate Hike For San Diego Water Customers

Water customers in San Diego probably won't get a break from steep rate hikes.

To cover rising costs, the city wants to increase water rates by 62-percent and sewer rates by 31-percent over four years. The hikes would be implemented over four years.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports a consultant has recommended no rate changes, but a city council committee tentatively endorsed the increase.

Council-member Sean Elo-Rivera says he still hopes there's "wiggle room" on some of the increases. However, the Council's Environment Committee voted to pass the proposal for a full Council Vote.

A hearing is expected at the end of September as the process moves forward.
