The San Diego City Council on Monday passed a plan to implement paid parking at Balboa Park, following hours-long public comment where more than 100 community members participated.
The ordinance was passed 6-2, with Councilmember Raul Campillo being absent. The proposal adopted by the city council ensures that verified residents of the City of San Diego receive discounted parking and preserves some free parking options for park employees and volunteers.
Despite the approval of new parking meter rates, the City of San Diego said in a press release that these fees for the park’s lots and on-street metered parking will begin upon establishment of a quarterly or annual pass program for park goers, which is expected later this year.
In addition, the city said a program is anticipated by January 2026, which allows verified residents of the city to park for half the price of the non-resident parking lot rate. The cost of parking within Balboa Park will vary, with fees depending on how close it is to the center of the park. The city will use three different “tiers” or “levels” to determine the cost of each parking lot.
Level 1 lots include Space Theater, Casa de Balboa, Alcazar, Organ Pavilion, Bea Evenson, Palisades and South Carousel.
- Non-resident rate: $16 per day and $10 for up to 4 hours.
- Resident rate: $8 per day and $5 for up to 4 hours.
