Ariana Grande is sharing the reason behind her shocking new look.
The "We Can't Be Friends" singer surprised fans last month when she unveiled her brand new hair transformation, switching from the blonde she has rocked for the last three years to the return of her darker, brunette style. Grande had initially made the leap to blonde after landing her dream role of Glinda in Wicked, and with the sequel Wicked: For Good coming out this month, she felt it was time to transition back, per People.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Grande explained why her looks have leaned darker while promoting Wicked: For Good compared to the blondes, pinks and pastels she gravitated toward during the first Wicked movie.
"With the first [Wicked] press tour, I wanted to celebrate Glinda in a more on-the-nose way, and be an extension of her and extend the time with her through clothes, through the blonde and through everything," she said.
According to Grande, who said "it's fun to play with the storytelling" in her fashion while on the press tour, her styling also hints at what to expect in the new film as she wanted to explore her character's inner darkness during press this time around.
"Now I can show up as the actress who played her and play into the darker tones of the movie," she said. "It's fun to play with hair and makeup and fashion."
Wicked: For Good premieres November 21.
