89,000 San Diego Residents May Lose Power As High Winds Hit County

Santa Ana winds are forecasted to hit San Diego on Wednesday and continue through the weekend, bringing a Red Flag Warning to much of the county. The National Weather Service warns that "Winds could be damaging, with potential to knock down trees and power lines."

The Red Flag Warning takes effect at 6pm on Wednesday through 10pm on Saturday as 50mph gusts are possible in the county's mountains and western valleys. The most critical fire danger is expected Wednesday through Friday morning.

In anticipation of the dangerous winds, SDG&E began notifying customers on Tuesday that their power could be shutoff starting Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, and said that outages could last through Monday. 88,720 customers were notified and told that the shutoff could last for days because of the potential fire danger. The list of areas affected by the shutoffs is available here.

SDG&E will post hourly updates on its website while conditions are hazardous.
