Epic 'Christmas Vacation' Themed House In California Facing Huge Fines

A California homeowner known for his holiday decorations may be fined if he doesn't remove a new addition to his yearly display.

According to ABC7, this is the fourth year Jeff Norton has transformed his front yard in La Mirada into a tribute to the 1989 holiday classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

"You know, as a kid, we loved this movie. We really gravitated with it as a family, and it just kind of grew on us. And then I had that fantasy to really build into it and got out one day and started putting lights on the house, and one thing led to another," Norton told ABC7.

This year, Norton added a fake second story on top of his house and the City of La Mirada wants him to take it down.

"I said, 'There's no way in this world I would remove that until January 1.' It is a makeshift, fake facade that I put up on my roof," said Norton.

The City Manager told KABC Norton built the new section without permits and city staff doesn't want it flying off with a strong wind or accidentally hurting someone.

If Norton doesn't remove it, citations will be sent starting at $100 and then increasing by the week. According to the city manager, he has until the end of this week to remove this part of the display before the warnings start.

"I will more than happily pay that fine. I'm not necessarily happy, but I'll do that to keep this up for the whole entire community. I'm not gonna take this down -- no ifs, ands or buts," said Norton.
