There has been a warning issued for dog owners because of the parasite Heterobilharzia Americana, being discovered in California. The parasite is a flatworm that can cause an illness that impacts the liver and intestines. Reseachers want to raise awareness that way, you can get your dog medical assistance if they become ill, some of the symptoms are lethargy, loss of appetite and weight loss. It can take several months before the worst symptoms of the illness appear, and it does seem to be rare. Since 2019, in California only 11 dogs in three counties have been confirmed. And as of recently the dogs who have been sick have all swam in the Colorado river so do not let your dogs swim in the river.
